Sharing Nature with Children
by Joseph Cornell
As Joseph Cornell's classic
book approaches its 20th anniversary, Cornell has drawn upon a wealth of experience in
nature education to significantly revise and expand his book. New nature games
- favorites
from the field - and Cornell's typically insightful commentary will make the second edition
of this special classic even more valuable to nature lovers world-wide. The Sharing Nature
movement that Cornell pioneered has now expanded to countries all over the globe.
Recommended by Boy Scouts of America, American Camping Association, National Audubon
Society and many others.
Sharing Nature with Children
is not just a book, but a powerful approach to nature education. The first edition of this
book sparked a worldwide revolution in nature education, and became a classic. The author,
Joseph Cornell, is one of the most highly regarded nature educators in the world today.
His expertise, and his irrepressible enthusiasm for the grandeur and mystery of nature,
spill over onto every page. His unique blend of knowledge and warmth creates an atmosphere
for learning that is very contagious.
In honor of the book's 20th
Anniversary, Cornell drawing upon his experience giving workshops worldwide has added
eight new games and revised many others in this second edition.

Eyes Wide Open: Going Behind the
Environmental Headlines
by Paul Fleischman
I highly recommend Eyes Wide Open: Going
Behind the Environmental Headlines by Paul Fleischman. This
outstanding book is filled with very important information that
everyone 14 years old and up would greatly benefit from reading.
This book provides excellent information that teachers, parents
and any adult who cares about the future would greatly benefit
from reading too.
There is a curriculum guide available, as well.
Eyes Wide Open: Going Behind the Environmental Headlines
gives an overview of many of the environmental challenges and
empowers the readers to discern the manipulated information that
they are bombarded with.
It is imperative that today’s youth be given the tools they need
to solve the environmental problems that they are going to
inherit. This book is one very important tool for this effort.
The book is filled with valuable information and great
resources. It is put together in an interesting, engaging
format, and is printed on 100% recycled paper.
One of my favorite things about this book is that it helps teens
and readers of all ages gain an understanding about vested
interests. It is incredibly important that people learn to use
discernment in deciphering the headlines and information being
disseminated to sell ideas and products.

EarthScore:
Your Personal Environmental Audit & Guide
Written by Donald W Lotter
I highly
recommend this book. This book will connect you to the
earth. To be more precise, it will make you aware of your connections to
the earth. Physically, we interact with the earth in hundreds of
different ways, most often indirectly through things we buy like food,
consumer goods, and electricity--but also directly in acts such as
driving and gardening. EarthScore takes you through a fun and
educational exercise and tallies Impact Points, which assess one's
impact on the environment; counts Action Points, measuring positive
contributions, and provides a score and rating on your own EarthScore
chart. Used by many organizations and colleges.
EarthScore is available on the following basis:
Individual copies: send check or money order for $5.00 plus $1.50
for shipping.
Quantity orders: for copies used with groups or in an educational
setting the discount is 50% on 5 or more copies. Send all order to:

Building
Classroom Communities: Strategies for Developing a Culture of Caring
by David A.
Levine
This
is a perfect book for the busy teacher interested in developing a
"culture of caring" in her/his classroom. The book provides
clear, concise information and activities on how to develop a strong
classroom community and can be read in a couple of sittings.
As we strive to help our
children learn how to respect and appreciate the earth, and the animals
and plants, it often becomes apparent that far too few children respect
themselves and other people. In fact, it becomes strikingly clear that
many children lack valuable interpersonal skills – in particular
compassion for others. Building Classroom Communities: Strategies for
Developing a Culture of Caring by David A. Levine goes a long way in
helping to develop invaluable classroom practices to provide a safe and
nurturing environment for children to develop and support each other. In
addition to excellent community building activities, David Levine
presents an easy-to-implement approach to teaching empathy. Creating a
classroom environment which supports children in the development of
these invaluable personal skills will not only affect the students that
are in your classroom, but it will spread out to all the living
creatures that have contact with these more empowered and compassionate
human beings.
